Washington.– The nation's largest fireworks display exploded in a spectrum of color over the East River, temporarily stealing the spotlight from New York's world-famous skyline and helping to create a brilliant end to a day of July Fourth celebrations nationwide.

More than 3 million people had been expected to attend the New York display, though no crowd estimates were immediately given. It had been moved south along the river this year so onlookers could get a better view of the skyline.

Spectators thronged the riverfront in a light rain, some holding red, white and blue umbrellas.

Edwin Aleman staked out his viewing spot in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn hours before the show.

"These are million-dollar views," he told WNYW-TV. "This is what New York City is all about: the views, the skyline."

More than 35,000 shells sparkled, arched, spiked and fanned over the river during the half-hour show, launched from barges in two areas. It was televised on NBC to songs including "Give My Regards to Broadway," the "Tennessee Waltz" and, of course, "Yankee Doodle."

Organizers said this year's pyrotechnics included new nautical fireworks that floated on the water. Other new shells went through multiple transformations after they launched, providing four different effects.

It was such a large and potentially dangerous load of fireworks that the shipment got its own Fire Department escort from the moment it crossed the state line from New Jersey, officials said.

Baloney .. what's there to celebrate? .. over 4000 servicemen killed in Iraq .. others killed in Afghanistan .. up to a million Iraqis possibly dead .. others living as refugees in Syrria and Jordan .. 62,000 Americans have lost their jobs .. the country is being run by "Bozo The Clown" who has borrowed billions more for his "stimulus package" .. Bozonomics .. and if our luck does not change the job will be handed over to "Mad Dog McCain" .. who sees a 100-years of war in Iraq .. we are bloody doomed .. there is nothing to celebrate except the death and destruction that we have so ably spread around the world .. this is a cursed land .. we are a cursed people .. a nation of openly and rampantly racist people to the core .. shame on us ..

the truth is that we went there to steal oil, and they do not care how many Americans or Iraqis die in the process.

well i guess we could have elected the democrat.. i'm sure we would not have had 9/11, famine in africa, the tidel wave in asia, katrina the hurricane, the earthquake in asia, the war in iraq if a democrat was in the white house. how about the 80 million or so sent to the dominican republic just after the tropical storm last year. (i think it is being sent over a couple years.)..america is always the first to help, the first to sacrifice our own dollar value to help others... which is what has happened.. the rest of the world is catching up to america... china now has more roads, bridges than america.. 1 billion people.. i don't think we had any choice to spend all this money, i don't agree with all of it.. but what can i do? why don't we get some of these rich baseball players to help their own.. (opps.. that will never happen) does anyone know how much money the us sends to the dr a year?.. i have no idea..... i don't like politics either..
