New York.– On an evening its rivals were preoccupied with Christie Brinkley's divorce and the capture of a Brooklyn murder suspect, New York's WXTV led its local news with a story about graffiti saying "Get out of the USA" painted near a Peruvian restaurant on Long Island.

The Spanish-speaking Univision affiliate figured it was a more meaningful story for its audience, and those kind of choices are paying off.

Within the past few months, WXTV's 6 p.m. newscast has eclipsed its English-speaking competitors on ABC, CBS and NBC stations in popularity among viewers younger than 49. Sister station KMEX in Los Angeles had more viewers in June for its newscast than any of its English competitors, regardless of age, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Spanish-speaking news outlets all across the country have grown to become major players in their markets and all trends indicate that growth is only going to continue. In the New York market, for example, there were 2.7 million Hispanics in 1990 and 4.3 million this year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The mainstream of the US capitalist media with its vile strategy of exclusive focus on blood (crime) and come (semen) is disgusting.

But the Spanish-language stations are close behind and getting worse like their English-language models.

Look at the CSIs " Hey, guys, there's some blood."

Whoopi!

"Wait a minute, there's some semen. For Heaven's sake, WOW!"

The news of the US capitalist media is more focused and exclusive on blood and come than the CSIs.

"Where's the blood?"

"Where's the come?"

Oldline media is dying. Evening newscasts inspire little if any confidence, even compared to the slop on offer at the cable news channels. The Spanish broadcasts can hang on and even grow their audience because they are less technologically sophisticated.

But I do agree the "old media" is dying and they can not figure out why.

Manhatten,

I disagree, one reason they are successful is the fact that they like the ever hated Fox News (hated by liberals) is that they do not spin the news they only report and offer no opinion.

Example:

ABC, CBS, NBC- Six people were shot and killed in an apparent drug deal gone bad, it seems the shooter came from a broken home and was repeatedly abused by his father when he was young.

Uivision, Telemundo etc.- A drug deal gone bad has left six poeple seroiusly injured. Police sources say one individual was seeking revenge over some previous deals with the same individuals.

No wonder the majority of hispanics after living 20 years in the USA can't speak reasonable english. I think Univision is just like the other stations but with a more naive audience that don't want to intergrate into US mainstream..

I don't know about this majority business, but who cares as long as their kids learn English.

Manhattanite, I mean you have young adults that came to the states at 18 and are 24 that can't speak english to save their life. But they will tell you all of the TVNovelas latest drama. I hope Im not offending people but I find that many hispanics dont care of learning english. Yes, the kids young do learn english I mean that should be a given though..would you say so?

texasshoe news without spin is a cute notion, like unicorns. If I ever spot either I'll send you a note.

Jabao I can't say I've met many adolescent immigrants that manage to avoid learning some degree of English. I know it is only anecdotal but in my own family I had a wave of cousins come over in their late teens, and they all picked it up. Sure a lot of older people do fit your description but Latinos are hardly alone in this. It is just more evident because proximity to Latin America ensures a steady supply of adult immigrants. Also don't forget the extent to which learning a new language is a skill rooted in biology, and most people of any group have lost this ability by adulthood. You may think these people have never tried, but it is also possible they tried and failed. Again anecdotal but I do know of people who surely tried on their arrival to learn English both formally and informally, but cannot progress beyond very basic marketplace phrases.
