Washington.– Rep. Charles Rangel has spent the past week reeling from revelations that he failed to report rental income from a beach villa he owns in the Dominican Republic.
But when the Harlem Democrat tries to explain himself, he mangles the facts so much it's easy to see how his accounts –and accountants– are muddled.
Rangel has repeatedly referred to his New York City apartments as `rent subsidized,' when they are actually rent stabilized.
He has given different prices of what the beach villa originally cost. And he has reported income from the property in congressional paperwork some years; other years, he hasn't.
Rangel has a big say in determining how the rest of the nation pays taxes as chair of the Ways and Means Committee. He has resisted Republican calls to lose his committee post.

Clearly this guy is not an accountant or good businessman but a politician. For example, the mistake of confusing apartments that are rent stablized with subsidized is a mistake that clearly says that Charlie does NOT understand this stuff. Secondarily, keeping info on his RD villa in congressional paperwork some years vs. others not shows the inconsistencies due to lack of understanding. But in fact, his Accountants & Tax Attorney should have noticed subtle changes in filings from one year to the next. This is a basic sanity check by accountants as well as tax agents.
I will take Charlie any day instead of an RD politician or even Dick Cheney shooting a hunting buddy in the A$$! Notice there was never an outcry against the white guy (Cheney) because everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt ... Unfortunately, even in America this benefit of the doubt is something Charile may never get. REALITY CHECK: The southern conservatives are all ready & self-justified 4 a LYNCHIN'!

I wonder why nothing is ever written about The Bush administration that has dished out lucrative reconstruction contracts in Iraq to favored U.S. based corporations including Halliburton and denied contracts to many Iraqi and foreign based companies.
Making them Home Boy's very rich off a F*ing War.
Then at last count Halliburton had 58 offshore subsidiaries in Caribbean tax havens. With Cheney at the helm Halliburton’s tax payments to the U.S. went from $302 million in 1998 to zero in 1999, when they also received a refund of $85 million from the Internal Revenue Service.
They pay No Taxes!
Next you that during Cheney’s tenure as CEO from 1995 to 2000, Halliburton Products and Services set up shop in Iran. The Halliburton subsidiary does approximately $40 million a year worth of oil field service work for the Iranian government. 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl visited the subsidiary in the Cayman Islands and found that it had no office and no employees

My family and I pulled through Ike with minimal discomfort but I am not sure about Belail.
Secondly, Grosero-Produce some facts to back up what you are saying- I worked in Haiti and the Balkins supporting KBR which became part of Halliburton and I damn sure paid taxes and anything or any company that works as a contractor to the US government gets paid from the US government in the US, in US dollars, that is the way LOGCAP, CONCAP, NAVCAP and AFCAP work. Those are contracts let by the department of defense in support of the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force respectively. These contracts existed long before the Bush and Cheney administration.
Thirdly-ONLY US owned companies may bid in the role as prime contractor as to what Halliburton is now doing and they have not been the only ones, ALL you major companies are working in IRAQ, Dyncorp, Bechtel, KBR, Halliburton, and depending on the work it is up to them to subcontract out.....

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has withdrawn a divorce petition just as jurors were to be selected for a trial regarding the couple's division of assets.
"We've never been separated, we're not separated now and there is no divorce," Rangel said in a statement about his relationship with his wife Alma, to whom he has been married for 42 years, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.
Rangel, 78, who filed for divorce in February 2007, has been plagued by recent revelations he failed to report $75,000 in rental income from a waterfront villa in the Dominican Republic.
That and a brouhaha over Rangel's four rent-stabilized apartments in a Harlem building have led to Republican calls for Rangel to resign from the influential House Ways and Means committee

Among the new discrepancies:
_Rangel's papers over the past 10 years show no reference to the sale of a home he once owned on Colorado Avenue in Washington.
_The details of a property bought in Sunny Isles, Fla., are bewildering at best. The stated value changes significantly from year to year, and even page to page, from $50,000 to $100,000 all the way up to $500,000.
_Some of the entries for investment funds fluctuate strangely, suggesting that the person either didn't have accurate information or didn't fill out the paperwork correctly.
Rangel spent the past week trying to answer questions about his ethics and his finances.
He admitted he owes the Internal Revenue Service about $5,000 in back taxes for unreported income from the rental of his vacation villa, and probably a smaller amount to state and city tax collectors.

Since Nancy Pelosi promised that "Democrats intend to lead the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history," I guess undereporting $75,000 in income, cheating 4 disadvantaged families out of affordable housing and the other Rangel offenses should be the goal of every honest, open and ethical American. When the IRS comes calling, I suggest every American call MS. Pelosi as a defense witness......tks pete

As chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Charles Rangel writes the nation's tax laws for the rest of us. But he seems to have a hard time understanding them himself. The Manhattan Democrat calls himself "irresponsible" for not paying taxes on $75,000 in rental income from a villa in the Dominican Republic, but he seems oblivious to the hypocrisy of his situation.
Rangel's back-taxes problem comes after other embarrassing revelations that his landlord has let him use four rent-controlled apartments at about half market value and that he solicited funds for a center named after himself on congressional letterhead.
