Beijing.– A Chinese dairy that sold milk powder linked to kidney stones in infants knew it contained a banned chemical weeks before ordering a recall, the health minister said Saturday.

One child has died and an official said the number of children sickened had risen to 432. Investigators have detained 19 people and are questioning 78 to find out how melamine was added to milk supplied to Sanlu Group Co., China's biggest milk powder producer, officials said at a news conference. They said some tainted powder was exported to Taiwan but none was sent to other foreign markets.

In Taiwan, authorities seized thousands of bags of Chinese milk powder. There was no word on whether any was consumed in Taiwan.

Chinese officials defended the speed of their response to the country's latest product safety disaster. They said authorities were only told of the contamination Monday, even though Sanlu received complaints as early as March and its tests found melamine in August.

Not enough they tried to kill off our pets now going after children?

A nitrogen-rich chemical used to make plastic and sometimes as a fertilizer may have been deliberately added to an ingredient in pet food that has sickened and killed cats and dogs across the country, public and private officials say. A leading theory is that it was added to fake higher protein levels.
Melamine has been found in wheat gluten, rice protein concentrate and, in South Africa, corn gluten, all imported from China, and all meant for use in pet food, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed Thursday.

I invest heavily in China but this type of business is very unethical. It is sad that our country drags its feet on dealing with China. We are hard line on Cuba because they are communist but the USA is two faced when it comes to business with communist China. We are afraid they are too big, powerful and powerful lobbyist from Fortune 500 do NOT want to miss opportunities to grow there. So, we have a double-standard.

As a rule, do NOT buy toys or food from China! The have habitual violations and nothing is done! Incredible. So, read the labels and live longer.

China will sell anyone anyhting, but the importers are to blame as well because they know they are buying inferior products and putting them on their shelves.

The poor consumers are the victims and alot of them don't have the education to understand the dangers Thats no excuse and as far as I am concerned the oneswho are manufaturing and selling poisen should be arrested tried and convicted for pre-meditated murder.

Unfortunately there is very little or no consumer protection in most countries so JD_Dominguez is giving good advice.
