Port-au-Prince.– Matt Damon kept his cool as he helped distribute food from a truck that got stuck in the mud in a western Haitian town where Hurricane Ike left hundreds of people homeless and hungry.
He arrived with Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean to hand out rice, beans and cooking oil in Cabaret, a town that saw 60 people die in flash floods when Ike grazed Haiti last week.
Things got rough when the truck carrying 300 bags of food ran into a ditch, forcing the rest of the caravan to stop. Hundreds of Haitians mobbed an SUV carrying the celebrities, chanting "Wyclef!"
"I want to see Wyclef because he is my artist," said Jean Sadrac, an unemployed 25-year-old. "I want Wyclef to help me with money or water."
Jean clambered onto the roof of the SUV to calm the crowd, while bodyguards helped Damon make his way toward the truck with the food. He reached it easily; nobody recognized him.
Damon said he enjoyed being in a place where few people have seen his movies. "It's nice, it's really easy to move through a crowd like this," Damon told The Associated Press, grinning wryly as he watched Jean talk to the crowd.

yes, Josean, the resident kkk types get all wound up when celebrities help poor countries. they disparage them from the comfort of their bedrooms, while they are trying to decide between the mercedes and the bmw. as i said, they give a homeless guy a half eaten sandwich, and have the tax preparer write it off as a "10, 000 dollar charitable contribution". i have little patience for people who question the motives of others who do acts of kindness. it is pretty demented to marginalise help, by introducing your own spin on things. not because republicans are not known for selfless acts means everybody has an angle. at least oprah wind free, as you so cleverly call her, has a record. she built a school in africa. what have your icons, such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity done to help the economies of poor countries, beyond buying off-brand viagara by the carton? benefitting from other people's misery, mrios? that could only come from a gringo who does not understand what relief is.

charity is charity, whatever the theatrics. more often than not, all the sturm and drang connected to these celebrity efforts is initiated and coordinated by the media, and by agents. there are people who would like to do good works in private, but , in a capitalist world, everything has to be infused with the potential to generate revenue. so, a guy simply wants to go donate a few thousand dollars and see the damage for himself, but his agent wants it to be a circus. so, do not be so quick to condemn the artists, if you do not know all the moving parts of the situation.

But, they're wasted on stiff-shirt conservatives like GC who will find any opportunity to push ultra-conservatism. Unfortunately, many don't accept that Wyclef was born there & has a passion 4 Haitians taking many artists there (ie Angelina & Brad).
Haiti is the poorest in our hemisphere, much to their own Gov doing. Similarly, it's amazing that the current US economy has not been this bad since Bush I and then the Great Depression before that.
As a an investor everyone's holding their breath on the Lehman Bros failure after Bear Sterns a few months ago & also now a buyout of Merril Lynch & Countrywide before they actually fall to failure. The conservatives have broken many records such as losing millions in fortunes, destroyed firms, thousands of jobs, record home foreclosures, bankrupticies, recession etc.

I have nothing against celeberties helping out charities. I have used them myself for various charities. I do have a problem with celebretards who insert themselves as part of the story.
The right way for Mr. Damon was to use his money to send a small film crew to document the tragedy then hold a press conference in the U.S.. He most likely would have had more media exposure that way as many media outlets would not spend the money sending crews and reporters to Haiti.
But Mr. Damon wnats the world to know what a good guy he is. Look at him handing out help. Ain't he sweet?

"-- Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227)."
-- Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
