Obama and Chavez

Zoom Picture

Bogota.– The Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez "is exploiting'' anti-US feelings in Latin America.

Obama said, however, that Washington should not react "excessively" to his attacks, but understand the needs of the region and seek a "respectful dialogue" with Latin America.

"I think that Chávez has been exploiting the anti-US feelings in the region. This is due, in part, to the fact that the United States has been so obsessed with Iraq that we are not interested enough in the Latin American situation," said Obama in an interview with a group of radio stations, including Colombia's Caracol, which disclosed the statements on Monday, AP reported.

While Washington has focused for years on terrorism and the war in Iraq, "we give to Latin America (for instance) just a week and this has created a vacuum that people like  Hugo Chávez has been able to fill,'' added the Democrat candidate who spoke in English.

"It is important for us not to overreact in relation to Chávez. What we must do is to make him understand that we do not want him to continue spreading anti-US feelings" in the region and that "we are interested in a respectful dialogue with Latin America to seek how to improve their standards of life," he said.

In addition, ships from Russia's Northern Fleet set sail for the Venezuelan coast. They included the fleet's nuclear-powered flagship, the Pyotr Veliky, and the large anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Chabanenko, along with military tugboats and tanker ships. Like the Tu-160s in Venezuela, there is little military justification for the naval escapade -- except perhaps to remind Washington that the Russian fleet still has ships capable of reaching the Caribbean Sea. The Pyotr Veliky was created to engage other aircraft carrier groups in battle, but without powerful air support, the cruiser is little more than a huge floating target.

In short, Obama 48% and McCain 45% when major polls are averaaged. Obama up a point from yesterday.

Not sensational, but promising. It's still too early to sing "Chicago is my kind of town."

The debate, this week, is gonna be big.

"The economy is fundamentally sound," McCain declared last week.

Then a few days later, McCain announced "We need a big bailout or else."

McCain wants the US people to buy sub-prime mortgages from US banks, investment banks, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and others ... in the US and abroad.

How much is a sub-prime mortgage worth?

A nickel, maybe a dime.

How much does McCain want to pay for them?

The sub-primes are bundled into investment instruments called mortgage-backed securities (MBSs) and one security sells for $25,000, the lowest denomination. McCain wants to buy MILLIONS of these "securities."

So, the fundamental principle of the bailout deal is the US people will buy nothing for a lot of money, because McCain believes "investors" shouldn't bear risks.

Control economic speculating, da Silva tells U.N.

International economic institutions need the teeth required to stop the wild speculation that is putting the world's economy at risk, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio ''Lula'' da Silva said Tuesday.

Then imperialist running dogs ... and even a few capitalist hyenas ... surrounded LF and bit him.

Here's the deal on Lula. This is why he mad.

When Lula came to power, Hugo Chavez told him "Lula, buddy, don't do anything else but pay off the IMF. The IMF ain't no good; it will steal you blind."

Lula said OK, and did it.

Then the big US capitalists said "Lula, Brazil got money again?"

"Yeah," Lula said with a big smile.

So, Bear Stearn, Lehman Bros., Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, JP Morgan, Bank of America ... all of 'em thieves ... flocked to Brazil, saying to Lula "Here's what you should do with your money?"

Lula, flattered by the attention of the elite, said OK and did what they told him.

Hugo Chavez came back and said "Lula, take your money out of them US banks and securities. I just put ... almost all ... of my money, about 34B, in the Bank of International Settlements in Switzerland."

"But I invested big in US debt, if I cash out, I lose on early penalties and the value of my holdings will fall fast as I pull out."

"If you stay in that bad US debt, you gonna lose more than if you pull out," Chavez countered.

"I can't take a chance on pulling out," Lula said. So, he stayed.

Now, he knows that junk bonds is junk worth less than real junk. If Brazil is gonna benefit from the Bush/McCain bailout, Brazil can't pullout. Either he stays or takes his junk bonds to Rio.

He's stuck.

On paper, Brazil has the largest currency reserves in the western hemisphere at 206B.

[USA currency reserves is about 75B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List....ries_by_foreign_exchange_reserves

But a good size piece of Brazil currency reserves is junk. So, Brazil has no where neat 206B it claims. That's just on paper.

Caracas, Sept 21. ABN.- The international reserves of Venezuela increased more than 281% last decade thanks to the economic policy carried out by the Government ....

“When we ... arrived here, Venezuela was nose diving. We did not have, practically, international reserves; only about 10 billion dollars. Nowadays, by August 5, 2008, according to Venezuelan Central Bank, we have more than 38 billion dollars,” Chávez emphasized.

“We have in United States about 375 million dollars, which is something like 1% of our reserves. And that amount belongs to some associated balances with some banks that work as correspondent banks for financial services in the North American market, where we still have some companies,” he said.

President Chávez said Venezuelan treasure and international reserves are well protected and in a safe place from the economic and financial crisis affecting United States.

"belial why have you and Dread not commented on thishttp://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....merce-celebrates-Bossa-Nova"

0000

GC, I'm more interested in that thread than all of the others combined.

I did a comment on the thread because it gave an opportunity to say something about Stan Getz whom you introduced into the thread, not the article.

But I did a Stan and bossa thing.

You know, both put together, not just a Stan thing. I am an avid admirer of Getz; so, I leaped at the opportunity to talk about my man, Stan.

Hardly had I finished the comment that something in the computer rose up, appeared and ate the comment as I was about the click "POST COMMENT."

I FINALLY HAVE COOLED DOWN. SO, YOU MAY HEAR FROM ME ON BOSSA AND STAN.

I would like to get that little man in the computer and choke the shit out of him.

http://www.eluniversal.com/2008/0....enezuela-obtiene-su_1061582.shtml

Did you know a citizen of Venezuela, no matter how much money you have in th bank or by your ability to pay, can only spend $2500.00 per year on credit card purchases on the internet or by traveling. The Bolivar is not exchangeable outside of Venezuela with ANY currency. If you own a business in Venezuela and have to buy parts or raw material outside of the country, regardless how much money you have you must apply to CADIVI for PERMISSION to obtain foriegn currency and show that you spent all of it in your business transaction or risk never being able to obtain it again. texasshoe offers "venezuela is in shambles". when i am done laughing at his article, i will ask him if he has been watching tv or reading american press releases recently. shambles, shoe? you mean like the US economy? there are societies which take draconian steps to protect themselves from economic meltdown. some might not like it, but it has to be done. the selfish capitalists and materialists usually rail against constrictions on personal spending and lavishments, but, since society is supposed to be a collective institution, they will just have to get used to a little inconvenience so that things survive. this is unlike america, in which thieves and criminals steal everything they can carry, destroying the lives of millions, then come with their hands out, looking for a bailout. in the 700 billion, they include 2.5 billion for " CEO compensation".they deserve to be shot for effrontery, and, had this been venezuela, maybe Hugo would have justifiedly called out the firing squad!

actually, texasshoe, taking measures to protect against capital flight is not a sign that an economy is "in shambles", as you characterise it. it is a strategy which has been applied from time immemorial in countries wherein the rich are prone to squirrel away their money in foreign banks in order to bring about the collapse of the economy. then, they get on flights to panama and Martha's Vineyard, leaving the poor and middle classes to fend for themselves. it might be painful to some, but, since they do not own the countries, but only think they do, the heck with them.

now i know why i hate republican thinking. Donald Trump just talked about how wonderful a guy John McCain is, whereupon he went on to tell the interviewer that these are "great times" to make money. " i just bought a property in Colts Neck, New Jersey, he offers. it was going for 110 million, but i got it for a fraction of that. so, just go pick out the house you want, and go speak to your banker" when reminded that the average american is having trouble putting gas in his tank, he looked nonplussed. "well, i know a lot of bankers, and they are nice guys", says the comb-over king. you see, these people have no contact with the average guy. there is a disconnect between these super-capitalist republicans and real people. they should just fence off a state like Montana, and put them all in it. then, maybe the rest of the world will not have to abide their nonsense.

Électricité de France (EDF) is the main electricity generation and distribution company in France. It was founded on April 8, 1946 as a result of the nationalisation of a number of electricity producers, transporters and distributors by the Communist Minister of Industrial Production Marcel Paul. Until November 19, 2004 it was a government corporation, but it is now a limited-liability corporation under private law (société anonyme). The French government partially floated shares of the company on the Paris Stock Exchange in November 2005,[2] although it retains almost 85% ownership as of the end of 2007.[3]

I truly believe China has more friends than Hugo lists. But some friends don't want to be openly friendly with China.

oooo

Beijing, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Wednesday a Revolution is underway in Latin America, where there is an increasing number of China-friendly countries.

The Venezuelan leader made the statements when meeting with the president of the Chinese Popular Assembly"s Permanent Committee, Wu Bangguo, his second host in the first day of activities as part of his fifth China visit.

There is a revival of popular forces, of governments allied to the construction of Socialism or alternative models to the US-encouraged model, Chavez stated.

As for examples, Chavez mentioned the governments of Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay, and “of course Cuba and Venezuela.”

They are all friends of China, he stressed.
