PORT AU PRINCE. – Haiti’s Senate today impeached prime minister Michèle Pierre-Louis, who decided not to attend that Chamber’s hearing, in which the motion for her removal was expected, and occurs just a little more than one year after she became Head of Government.
The dismissed Prime Minister has been a harsh critic of the Dominican Republic, for its alleged “gratuitous assassinations, recurrent aggressions, harassment and capricious deportations” of Haitians.
The Haitian Senate voted 18 for the dismissal, and one abstention, with 29 members speaking until dawn, after more than 10 hours of heated debates over her activities of alleged corruption.
The Senate voted for a resolution which from now on considers Pierre-Louis as having resigned, and asked Haiti president René Préval to adopt the measures to fill the prime minister’s absence.
According to Haiti’s Constitution Michèle Pierre-Louis must submit her resignation to the Head of State and continue tending to Government affairs until a substitute is named.
