NEW YORK.- William Lantigua, a Dominican born in Baní (south), Tuesday night was elected new mayor of Lawrence, one of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ most important cities.
A native of the Peravia provincial seat in the country’s South region, Lantigua represents Lawrence in the Massachusetts Capitol and won over incumbent David Adoo. who sought reelection,
He was boosted by the solid support of a broad coalition which demanded changes in municipal affairs and first had to win over four ex adversaries in September’s primaries.
Lantigua won 7, 075 votes to 6,090; the first time a Latino becomes the mayor in an important city of the six New England states.
The first Dominican to reach such a post is Alex Blanco, elected mayor of Passaic, New Jersey earlier this year.

I'm glad to see that Wilton Guerrero's word at the event in MA is turning into action. He said that he wanted to see more Banilejos take charge in politics and here we have one. Congrats William Lantigua.

Good for him
But Lawrence Mass a major city???????
From: United States, Lawrence, massachusetts
Its only 6 square miles, but the majority of citizens here are of Hispanic decent. 71% of the pop- not including illegals. In fact, its the second city in the US with the higest population of Dominicans. Washington heights came in @ # 1 - 2years ago.. Also the Lawrence City Council seats 9 members and 6 are hispanics.

Baby steps for the largest minority in the country. I dont view it as a "Dominican thing" but rather a testament of good leadership and getting communities/voters involved in the process. With regards to a comment (made above) about most minority voters "being illegals" - you may be right to certain degree but most importantly are the future generation of voters, they are the difference. If voters are involved now, chances are future generations will be even more involved. That is not say one must vote for a "latino" candidate simply because he/she is of same/similar cultural background, nevertheless it is a step in the right direction for the people of Lawrence, its Latino community and other minorities...
There are a total of 351 towns/cities in MASS. While The City of Lawrence may not be a major city it ranks # 13th in population (just over 70K), not something to sneeze at either...
Get involved, vote and let your collective voices really be heard.. regardless of who's running

So I am currently quite agitated to say the least. Ignorance is one of the greatest annoyances of mankind, in my opinion. I'm sorry, but whoever wrote this article is 90% wrong. Lawrence WAS a great wool-processing center until that industry declined in the 1950s. The decline left Lawrence a struggling city.

.....The population of Lawrence declined from over 80,000 residents in 1950 to approximately 64,000 residents in 1980, the low point of Lawrence's population. Today Lawrence is one of New england's poorest town, with high crime ( 9 murdered and 7 of those drug-related). 33% are on food stamps,72% of Lawrence budget comes from the state. Lawrence has an unemployment rate of 8.4%, compared the national average of 6.9%. Also David Abdoo never was a mayor for the city of Lawrence, he is a member of the council. Michael Sullivan is the current mayor, and he can't run for relection. Mayors can only serve two terms.

Not so sure whether to feel proud or concerned and skeptical about Dominicans ascension to political prominence.
I know we all wish to be proud and probably should be so. However, when it comes to political integrity, historical facts are not on our side-through the generations!
So please forgive me for remaining skeptical. Hope this individual and all who follow will alleviate this nagging skepticism, with their actions and accomplishments, and by the content of their character.

I hope that everything goes well for Mr. Lantigua, however, I will not consider this a victory. If any of you have visited Lawrence and then ask the white communities that have moved away from Lawrence and into central MA and Boston area, then will find the massive white flight out of this once working and middle class community.
It is sad that they do not trust us as people that can make a community more vibrant as they do with Asians. When caucasians see a massive influx the first thing they do is put a for sale sign and goodbye to the town.
You guys should read about the ongoing fight in Dominican stronghold of Washington heights in Upper Manhattan and the Inwood area. Inwood has always been out of the reach of many Dominican immigrants due to high prices even as they coexist to the point that it is hard to distinguish. But the residence in each is very different, and inwood has been expanding forcing many Dominicans out of their apts, which are converted into coops.

Unemployment in the Nation is about 9%, and actually more like 10%-12% once the statistics for this quarter come out.
So if your stats about Lawrence are correct then hey not so bad.

What's this important city that musters only 13,000 votes?

pelaut, it does not mean anything at all. This city has simply been left for dead all together by the middle class caucasians that made it a strong hold at the turn of the century. I think that this is only important for the Dominican population and the fact that they can actually practice a little direct democracy a la Greek style.
The people is able to communicate with directly and he'll identify with their ply, that is the benefit, pelaut. This is should not be taken serious since it does not position our much larger population even close to Cuban influence and politcal might. We'll take over number spot among hispanics of non mexican decent by 2012 and still fare far worse than the tiny cuban population and lights years behind PR and MEX. This is attributted in part to what Glomar so clearly indicated on his post.

lets just hope that Lawrence does better under Latino influence than Miami has. It was turned into the drug capital of Latin America, and the USA. Also Massive corruption, as it became the Latin Capital.

Dominicans cannot come close to competing against Cubans in Miami. The economic and political engine Cubans have created in Miami. The benefits of these two surely outweighs the negatives.
